On the Minas Gerais State side of the Mantiqueira Mountain Ridge(Serra da Mantiqueira) lies the Mantiqueira deMinas region. With a century of experience in producing quality coffees, the Mantiqueirade Minas region is currently one of the best-awarded regions in Brazil. Many of the Cup of Excellence winning coffees come from this region, year after year.
In 2011, Mantiqueira de Minas received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)due to its tradition and worldwide reputation for producing high-quality coffees. Coffees grown in this area typically have more complex profiles thanks to the (for Brazil) relatively high altitude and rich soil. There are 7800 registered coffee producers throughout the region, mostly growing coffee on small farms. This regional Mantiqueira de Minas consists of the production of several smallholder farmers who are associated to the Cocarive cooperative in Carmo de Minas.
Coffees are selected on quality, variety and process at Cocarive. In orderto be selected for their regional blends, the farm has to meet some criteria. To be allowed membership of Cocarivethe producer and farm have to follow a set of sustainability guidelines to preserve the (future of) the region. Cocarive takes care of warehousing, international promotion, dry milling and export for a lot of producers in the Mantiqueira de Minas region. During past harvests, Cocarive has proven to represent some of the best farms in the region.
