Naxo Loxa, meaning “Orange Blossom,” is a coffee cultivated by 7 Mazatec women who live in various communities in the high zone of Sierra de Flores Magón in northern Oaxaca. This region, known for its high demand in Mexico, stands out for preserving ancestral production techniques.
The women cultivate coffee using traditional polyculture systems, where coffee plants grow alongside fruit and timber trees. They also diversify their income and promote food sovereignty through the “milpa” system, an ancient farming method where corn is intercropped with squash, beans, chayote, and other crops.
Challenges they face although these women are the ones who guard and cultivate the land, this does not mean they own these plots that are generally under a quarter hectare. In most cases, land titles are in men’s names, limiting women’s access to financial credit and autonomy to manage resources that could improve their families’ lives. Some men, however, allow their wives and daughters to use their names on marketed coffee, acknowledging the vital role these women play in production.
